Port of Spain, Trinidad & Tobago – The United National Congress (UNC), led by Political Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar, has announced that her party will proceed with its own crime talks directly with the citizens of Trinidad and Tobago. This decision comes as national crime discussions between the Central Government and the Opposition remain stagnant.
Despite a recent call from President Christine Kangaloo for bipartisan collaboration to combat the nation’s rising crime rate, progress has been elusive. Persad-Bissessar also highlighted that a six-page letter detailing her party’s plans to fight crime, sent to Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley, has yet to receive a response.
The issue is further complicated by the previous involvement of former Police Commissioner Gary Griffith in these crime talks, from which he later withdrew after the Prime Minister indicated his participation was not needed. Citing the alarming increase in criminal activity and labeling the current government as “incapable” of effectively addressing the situation, Persad-Bissessar has taken it upon herself to directly engage citizens on a UNC crime plan.
This move signals a significant shift in the approach to national security discussions, as the opposition seeks to involve the public directly in finding solutions to Trinidad and Tobago’s persistent crime challenges.
