Scarborough, Tobago – In a significant initiative for regional heritage preservation, Tobago proudly hosted the UNESCO Underwater Archaeology Training program in November 2023. This specialized program welcomed 20 university students from across Latin America and the Caribbean, immersing them in the critical field of maritime heritage.
Over three intensive weeks, participants, guided by experts from UNESCO and the Kingdom of the Netherlands, engaged in hands-on exploration of underwater cultural heritage and learned best practices for its management and preservation. The program culminated on December 7th with compelling presentations by the students, marking a collaborative milestone in Caribbean maritime education and preservation.
The closing ceremony was attended by key Tobago officials, including Tashia Burris, Secretary of Tourism, Culture, Antiquities, and Transportation; Charleston Thomas, Technical Advisor for Culture; and Sean McCoon, Protocol and International Relations Officer. This collaboration underscores Tobago’s growing role in protecting and understanding the region’s rich submerged history.
