Full Support for Strategic Police Posts Across Tobago

August 13, 2026 — Chief Secretary Farley Augustine has reaffirmed that the concept of localized police posts and joint patrols is far from new for Tobago, clarifying that the Tobago House of Assembly (THA) fully supports strategic law enforcement placements across the island. Speaking on recent public discussions regarding heightened security measures, Augustine highlighted that community-level posts and tactical visibility have long formed a core part of Tobago’s safety strategy.

The Chief Secretary’s remarks follow national announcements surrounding the rollout of decentralized security posts and joint army-police patrol hubs aimed at increasing protective service presence and reducing response times in key zones.

Strategic Placement & Islandwide Security Alignment

Augustine emphasized that rather than viewing localized posts as an emergency reaction, Tobago has historically benefited from targeted substations and collaborative patrols between the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) and defense personnel:

  • Community-Based Presence: Placing police and joint posts in strategic commercial, coastal, and residential transit corridors deters opportunistic crime and restores public confidence in shared spaces.
  • Intelligence-Led Placement: Law enforcement deployment must focus on verified crime hotspot data, rapid-response accessibility, and commercial corridors like downtown Scarborough and rural transit points.
  • Inter-Agency Collaboration: The THA continues to partner with national security leadership to ensure that local infrastructure, logistics, and compound resources effectively support frontline officers.

Augustine reiterated that ensuring the safety of residents and visitors remains paramount, and the Assembly will continue backing modern, community-centered policing models that deliver lasting security for the island.
