August 17, 2026 — Tobago youths are taking to the water this week as the Glamorgan Youth Foundation officially kicked off its 2026 Sailing Camp under the theme “Chartering New Waters.” The grassroots initiative brings together key sporting stakeholders, community leaders, and national coaches to train aspiring young sailors and equip them with essential maritime and life skills.
Empowering Youth Through Maritime Sports
Building on the momentum of East Tobago’s thriving coastal traditions and the annual Glamorgan Regatta at Richmond Bay, the camp aims to introduce participants aged 8 to 17 to the fundamentals of competitive and recreational sailing.
- Comprehensive Training: Participants will receive hands-on instruction covering boat handling, wind reading, knot tying, water safety protocols, and open-water navigation.
- Stakeholder Collaboration: The program is supported by seasoned maritime instructors and national coaches who are scouting for emerging talent to feed into the national sailing development pipeline.
- Character & Discipline: Beyond technical mastery, the foundation emphasizes teamwork, resilience, decision-making, and environmental stewardship of Tobago’s coastal ecosystems.
Organizers noted that water sports offer viable pathways for international athletic competition, marine-sector careers, and eco-tourism entrepreneurship. The week-long camp will culminate in a friendly mini-regatta, giving the young sailors a platform to test their newly acquired skills on the water.
