Senate President Wade Mark as Acting Head of State

August 13, 2026 — Senate President Wade Mark is once again performing the duties of Head of State for Trinidad and Tobago following a formal swearing-in ceremony. The Office of the President confirmed that Mark assumed the role of Acting President on Saturday, August 8, 2026, with the oath of office administered by Chief Justice Mr. Justice Ronnie Boodoosingh.

His Excellency Wade Mark is carrying out the constitutional functions of the presidency during the temporary absence from the country of Her Excellency Christine Carla Kangaloo, O.R.T.T.. Constitutional Succession & Presidential Duties

Under Section 27 of the Constitution of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, the President of the Senate is designated to act as Head of State whenever the substantive President is abroad, incapacitated, or unable to discharge official functions.

  • Constitutional Continuity: In his acting capacity, Mark exercises the full scope of executive, ceremonial, and statutory duties vested in the presidency.
  • Official Expressions & Engagements: Among his official actions during this acting period, Acting President Mark issued formal condolences on behalf of the nation following the passing of renowned cultural icon and artistic polymath William “Willi” Chen, recognizing his immense lifelong contributions to national literature, visual art, and drama.

Mark will continue to serve as Acting President until President Kangaloo returns to the jurisdiction to resume her official duties.
