April 2, 2026 — Tobago’s top young track and field stars are headed to Grenada with fresh financial support from the Tobago House of Assembly (THA). Yesterday, the Division of Youth Empowerment and Sport (DYES) held a formal briefing and grant distribution for the local contingent representing Trinidad and Tobago at the 53rd CARIFTA Games.
The Assembly distributed a total of $57,000 in financial assistance to 19 individuals, comprising 15 athletes and four officials from Tobago who have been selected for the national squad. Each recipient received a grant of $3,000 to assist with travel-related expenses, specialized gear, and personal requirements for the regional showpiece.
The 53rd edition of the Games is set to take place from April 4–6, 2026, at the Kirani James Athletics Stadium in St. George’s, Grenada. Tobago’s presence in the national team remains robust, featuring standout talents such as the “Invincible Twins,” Tyrique and Tenique Vincent, as well as sprint sensation Alexxe Henry and hurdles specialist Jenna-Marie Thomas.
Assistant Secretary with responsibility for Youth Empowerment and Sport, Terance Baynes, urged the athletes to see themselves as ambassadors for the island. “This grant is a small token of the island’s investment in your future,” Baynes stated. “We expect you to perform with the same grit and determination that characterizes the Tobago spirit.”
Among the officials receiving support is team manager Cuquie Melville, who noted that the financial injection is a timely relief for families, especially given the rising costs of international sporting participation. As the athletes prepare to depart for the Spice Isle, the focus remains on improving the nation’s medal haul and maintaining Tobago’s reputation as a cradle for world-class athletic talent.
