A pilot project conducted by the Institute of Marine Affairs (IMA), known as MARIN Tobago, has revealed concerning findings about the health of some of Tobago’s vital marine environments. Studying five key reefs – Buccoo Reef, Flying Reef, Mt. Irvine, Angel Reef, and Boobsy Island in Charlotteville – marine biologists, including Dr. Anjani Ganase, discovered that even healthy-looking reefs are struggling to grow new coral. The outlook for other reefs, like Angel Reef in Speyside, is particularly grim.
These negative factors include high levels of sediment and algae cover, which effectively smother and kill corals. Pollution from the land further exacerbates these critical issues. Compounding the problem, the population of crucial reef fish, such such as parrotfish that naturally feed on algae, is declining.
Simultaneously, rising sea temperatures are already leading to widespread coral bleaching in Tobago’s reefs. Dr. Ganase explained that if this trend continues, the corals will die, making Tobago’s coastlines vulnerable to erosion from rough seas. This highlights the vital role coral reefs play in protecting shorelines. Based on current sea temperature projections, Tobago’s coral reefs are at significant risk.
The increasing cover of algae and sediments on Tobago’s reefs, combined with recurring coral bleaching events, directly threatens the island’s crucial tourism industry, potentially leading to job losses.
Despite the challenges, there is still hope. The MARIN study offered a glimmer of optimism, revealing signs of coral spawning among crucial reef-building corals. Marine biologist Dr. Hannah Lochan noted this positive development, which signifies that the coral has the inherent capacity for reproduction. Further research is essential to enhance coral reproduction and growth strategies, ultimately aiming to bolster reef resilience in Tobago. This ongoing research is critical for the future of Tobago’s marine ecosystems and its coastal protection.
