Tensions boiled over in downtown Port of Spain yesterday afternoon as a demonstration demanding justice and transparency over a controversial police-involved shooting ended in chaos, leading to the detention of primary activist Alyssa Phillip, her mother Camille Caresquero, and social media personality Jason De Silva.
The demonstration was staged near the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) on Richmond Street to protest the DPP’s directive to lay manslaughter and firearm-related charges against 24-year-old Kaia Sealy. Sealy was severely wounded and left paralysed in the January 20 police shooting in St. Augustine that claimed the life of her common-law husband, Joshua Samaroo.
