48 Students Receive Free Prescription Glasses

July 9, 2026 — Forty-eight students from Goodwood Secondary School are seeing their classrooms a little clearer tonight following a transformative healthcare and educational outreach initiative.

Through a collaborative public-private partnership between the Save Eyes Everywhere (S.E.E.) Foundation, the Massy Group (via the Massy Foundation), and the Trinidad Eye Hospital (TEH), the students were fitted with and presented brand-new, customized prescription eyeglasses free of charge. The intervention addresses uncorrected refractive errors among youth, directly eliminating vision barriers that impede learning, reading comprehension, and overall classroom engagement. Enhancing Student Vision and Educational Equity

The outreach initiative underscores the critical link between accessible pediatric eyecare and academic success:

  • Targeted School-Based Screenings: Optometrists and clinical specialists conducted comprehensive visual acuity examinations at Goodwood Secondary, identifying students struggling with undiagnosed myopia, astigmatism, and eye strain that often go unnoticed in standard classroom settings.
  • Relieving Family Financial Constraints: For many families in windward Tobago, the high cost of specialized optical testing, designer frames, and custom prescription lenses can delay necessary care. The corporate sponsorship by the Massy Foundation and S.E.E. Foundation ensured all diagnostic and hardware costs were fully covered.
  • Boosting Confidence and Performance: School administrators and teachers noted that equipping students with corrective lenses immediately improves blackboard readability, reading stamina, and digital learning comfort, fostering stronger self-esteem and higher examination scores.

Reporter Aaliyah Balgobin has the complete details on the eyecare initiative and the reactions from students, parents, and educators.
