THA says Express article inaccurate

The THA calls out Express newspaper for inaccurate and misleading oil spill article.

The Office of the Chief Secretary has issued a media release stating that contents in a Trinidad Express article written by Anna Ramdass dated 11/03/2024 are inaccurate and misleading. The article titled “A new threat for the sister Isle?…..Disposal of spilled oil raising serious concerns” alleges that the disposal of oil using pits at the Studley Park Landfill may be posing a threat to the environment due to oil spilling over the pits and interacting with the soil. Chief Secretary Farley Augustine tasked the Tobago Emergency Management Agency (TEMA) with inspecting the area, which confirmed no oil leakage from the pits and intact earthen dikes. He highlighted that the digging and lining process was approved by the Environmental Management Authority (EMA) and THA Occupational Safety and Health officers, with regular monitoring by landfill officers to prevent leaks. The Chief Secretary added that the Tobago House of Assembly (THA) is coordinating with the Ministry of Energy to swiftly dispose of oil from the spill.
