Keep your receipts and shop smart

Consumer Affairs Division advises keep receipts, check toy labels, read hire purchase agreements when Christmas shopping.

Port of Spain, Trinidad & Tobago – In the spirit of Christmas, it can be easy to overspend, especially with tempting deals and flea markets. To help shoppers, the Consumer Affairs Division has issued some important advice.

  • Keep Your Receipts: Always keep your receipts as proof of purchase. If an item is faulty or not of merchantable quality, you are entitled to a refund, exchange, repair, or credit note.
  • Check Toy Labels: When buying toys, be sure to check the labels for age recommendations, safety standards, and small parts.
  • Read HP Agreements: Before signing any Hire Purchase (HP) agreement, read it carefully and ensure you receive a copy. Guarantees for HP items are the same as for cash purchases, meaning you can seek a refund, exchange, or repair if there is a fault.
  • Know Your Rights: The Consumer Affairs Division also warned that policies stating “No Refund, No Exchange” are illegal. Any violations can be reported to the Division at 800-4277 or via their Facebook page.
