Scarborough, Tobago – The Office of the Chief Secretary has issued a media release calling an article in the Trinidad Express “inaccurate and misleading.” The article, dated 11/03/2024, claimed that oil being disposed of in pits at the Studley Park Landfill might be a threat to the environment.
Chief Secretary Farley Augustine immediately had the Tobago Emergency Management Agency (TEMA) check the site. TEMA confirmed that there was no oil leaking from the pits and that the safety barriers were still in place. Augustine also pointed out that the entire process of digging and lining the pits was approved by the Environmental Management Authority (EMA) and other safety officers. He added that the Tobago House of Assembly is working with the Ministry of Energy to get rid of the remaining oil quickly.
