Scarborough, Tobago – June 22, 2024 – Oil deposits continue to be spotted by fishermen in the waters behind the ANR Robinson International Airport in Tobago. These new sightings are believed to originate from the Gulfstream shipwreck near Cove, where work is ongoing to decant the vessel of its remaining 11,000 barrels of bunker fuel.
Fishermen first detected oil in the area on June 5th. They were previously assured by the Tobago Emergency Management Agency (TEMA) and the Office of the Chief Secretary that a single oil deposit escaped due to sea and weather conditions and was spread by the current to southwest Tobago, and that it was an isolated event. However, fishermen today posted a new video showing another oil deposit in the area, directly contradicting previous assurances. Curtis Douglas, President of the All Tobago Fisherfolk Association, expressed his frustration over the persistent issue, highlighting ongoing concerns about the Tobago oil spill’s impact and cleanup effectiveness.
