In late 2023/early 2024, as the United States reported an increase in COVID-19 cases attributed to the Eris variant (EG.5), citizens of Trinidad and Tobago were reassured that the nation was not experiencing a similar surge. While a slight, non-significant increase in COVID-19 cases in Trinidad was noted at the time, Tobago’s cases remained relatively low.
The New York Times had reported that the EG.5 variants were not considered a global threat and were consistent with strains already circulating in the U.S. Despite this, Dr. Faith B.Yisrael, Secretary of Health, Wellness, and Social Protection, continued to urge patrons to exercise caution.
With the borders having reopened in 2022, allowing citizens to travel freely outside Trinidad and Tobago, Dr. Faith B.Yisrael advised visitors, particularly those with chronic conditions traveling to the United States, to take precautions. This measure aimed to reduce their risk of COVID-19 infection while abroad.
At that time, COVID-19 vaccines continued to be available at major health centres in Tobago, underscoring the ongoing commitment to public health and protection against the virus.
