School repairs in Tobago are facing frustrating delays, and TTUTA Tobago President Bradon Roberts believes a more direct approach is needed to resolve immediate issues. Roberts emphasized that communicating directly with the Administrator of the Division of Education, who oversees its daily operations, is the most efficient way to tackle urgent problems, rather than relying solely on the Secretary or Assistant Secretary. He expressed concern that political influence may be shifting priorities, contributing to the delays.
Roberts pointed out that School Principals often have prepared lists of necessary repairs and detailed scopes of work ready. However, he believes that the Division of Education’s start period for school repairs comes too late in the process, especially considering the budgeted allocations.
He also mentioned a recurring issue: the Division of Education tends to respond promptly only when problems are highlighted through media attention. Roberts stated that while the Division’s Administrator and their team have made progress on some long-standing issues, certain matters are moving too slowly, and his members expect results. Therefore, he views advocating forcefully as his responsibility to ensure Tobago’s schools get the repairs they need.
