The Tobago Heritage FeGarvé Sandy reigned victorious again, having won last year’s competition. Other competitors who were also victorious were Zari Kerr, Caston Cupid, and Lesley Ann Ellis. All of them came out to showcase their talents, making the event entertaining.
All competitors were required to perform an original song that incorporated this year’s Tobago Heritage Festival theme, “We Come Back,” along with a vintage calypso song from 1980 to 1990. 1st place winner Garvé Sandy performed “We Come Back” for her original song, which has the same title as this year’s theme.
Sandy also performed “Rock Me, Rock Me” as her vintage calypso song originally sung by Rootsman, which made for an enjoyable performance. Zari Kerr placed second in the competition. He performed “Zombie Voices,” which discussed the rising crime on the island, the role of politics, and the changes to this year’s Tobago Heritage Festival.
He chose “The Slipper” by Calypsonian Penguin, which was released in 1983. This story tells the story of Mr Selwin, who returns from Brooklyn and finds out that his wife was unfaithful. In third place was Caston Cupid with his song “Heritage Celebration” which reminisces on the heritage festivals of long ago. Cupid performed The Mighty Duke’s 1987 song “Is Thunder,” delivering an entertaining performance.
Garvé Sandy won the first place prize of 40,000 dollars, Zari Kerr won 30,000, and Caston Cupid won 20,000 for their outstanding performances.
