Assemblyman Zorisha Hackett, tasked with the responsibility for the Division of Education, Research, and Technology and area representative for Bethesda/Golden Lane, expressed dissatisfaction with the current education system when questioned.
Secretary Hackett explained that during her time as a teacher, she observed students facing a disadvantage in school. In most cases, one teacher is assigned to teach 40 students, making it challenging to provide individual attention in classrooms that are focused on exams and timelines.
Furthermore, Hackett noted that over the years, she has observed students excelling in areas such as art and metalwork but struggling in academics, while others are strong academically but face challenges in extracurricular activities. She highlighted the need for a balanced approach, advocating for dual-system learning that immerses students in both academic and extracurricular areas.
Hackett also highlighted that in the past, subject areas beyond Mathematics, English, and Creative Writing were emphasized. Areas like Agricultural Science, Social Studies, life skills, and more were prioritized to cultivate what she describes as a well-rounded citizen.
