August 13, 2026 — The wait for the full operationalization of the new A.N.R. Robinson International Airport terminal is moving into its final stretch. Speaking to members of the media at the Magdalena Grand Beach and Golf Resort, Chief Secretary Farley Augustine confirmed that while the final opening date rests with the Cabinet, the facility is on the verge of welcoming passengers within the coming weeks.
Following the formal handover of warranties, operating manuals, and international certifications to the Airports Authority of Trinidad and Tobago (AATT) in June, major progress has been made on the facility’s internal outfitting. A joint $10 million investment by the Central Government and the THA is currently outfitting arrival and departure lounges alongside commercial vendor concession spaces.Readiness, Simulations, and Next Steps
Chief Secretary Augustine emphasized that the completion of internal Phase One works clears the runway for statutory approvals and operational trials:
Peak Season Target: Augustine gave assurances that the facility will be fully operational well ahead of the surge of international and regional visitors expected for Tobago Carnival in October.
Operational Readiness: Augustine noted that Phase Two fit-outs can continue while the terminal is operational, confirming that the physical infrastructure is ready to receive flights.
Statutory Gazetting: Customs and Excise Division must formally gazette the terminal building to activate customs control zones, duty-free retail, and international border clearance.
Simulation Exercises: Live passenger simulations will be conducted to stress-test baggage handling, border control processing, and ground transfers before the formal commissioning ceremony.
