T&TEC workers vow to continue protesting unsafe working conditions.

October 29, 2024 – Workers of the Trinidad and Tobago Electricity Commission (T&TEC) are vowing to continue their protests over unsafe working conditions, despite management’s attempts to secure a court injunction. Over the past few weeks, employees in both Tobago and Trinidad have held several demonstrations before the start of their shifts and during lunchtime.

According to Ancel Roget, President General of the Oilfields Workers’ Trade Union (OWTU), these protests do not constitute industrial action because they are happening on the workers’ own time. He stated that the workers are exercising their right to peaceful assembly and will not be “bullied” by the company. The company had previously sought an interim injunction from the Industrial Court to prevent the workers from taking industrial action, but the OWTU maintains its position that the protests are lawful.
