Project B.L.A.C.K., an initiative titled “Bestowing a Legacy of Black Culture Kindled Against Domestic Violence,” recently hosted a concert in Tobago. This significant collaboration involves The Roxborough Police Youth Club and The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), as stated by Tobago Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Collis Hazel. The partnership’s primary focus is to empower women and young girls to resist domestic abuse.
ACP Hazel explained that Project B.L.A.C.K. aims to utilize Tobago’s unique culture to raise awareness about domestic abuse. He noted that training sessions were designed to educate individuals, empowering them with strategies to resist such situations. “We felt that in order to educate and inform one of the areas we need to reach out to as stakeholder was our youth organization and our cultural organization, and hence the reason we took the opportunity to ensure that we reach out to all these 12 groups throughout Tobago east to educate them about this disease,” said ACP Hazel.
UNDP representative Ishelly Robinson Cooper indicated that Tobago had a crucial, short window of opportunity to attempt the first implementation of this initiative. The concert featured a variety of powerful performances, including spoken word pieces, dances, and songs, all passionately advocating against domestic violence targeting women and young girls throughout the day. This event underscores the commitment to fostering a safer community in Tobago.
