Scarborough, Tobago – The Division of Food Security, Natural Resources, the Environment and Sustainable Development has officially formed the Tobago Oil Spill Relief Committee. This committee was established on May 22nd, 2024, following the significant oil spill event on February 7th, which gravely impacted some of Tobago’s fisherfolk.
The newly formed committee aims to provide crucial relief to the island’s fishing industry, including directly supporting fishermen, fish vendors, boat owners, and crew members affected by the environmental disaster. Currently, the Committee is conducting a comprehensive Damage Assessment and Needs Analysis (DANA) to thoroughly understand the full extent of the damage and the specific needs of all affected groups within Tobago’s fishing community. This initiative marks a dedicated effort to facilitate recovery and support livelihoods post-spill.
