August 20, 2024 – The Prime Minister’s announcement of an upcoming change to the coat of arms has sparked a national debate regarding its financial impact and symbolic significance. The three ships belonging to Christopher Columbus, currently depicted on the national emblem, will be replaced by the steelpan.
Tobago Business Chamber Chairman Martin George endorsed the move, saying that it better represents the citizens of Trinidad and Tobago. His support highlights the widespread agreement that the steelpan, as the nation’s indigenous instrument, is a more authentic and unifying symbol of Trinidad and Tobago’s culture and identity than the colonial vestiges of the past.
