Port of Spain, Trinidad & Tobago – Former Police Commissioner Gary Griffith is questioning the rationale behind the Chaconia Silver Medal being awarded to two former acting Commissioners of Police, Stephen Williams and James Philbert.
In a media release, Griffith suggested that the selections were politically motivated. He criticized the awards as a dilution of their significance and a mockery of the prestigious positions. He also pointed out that the medal is meant to celebrate long and meritorious service, but questioned the evidence of accomplishments in promoting national welfare during their tenure. Griffith highlighted that under their leadership, crime rates soared, public trust in the police plummeted to 14%, and communities suffered significantly. He questioned how these individuals could be justified for such high accolades when their records were marked by high crime rates and public discontent.
