Either Stamp Duty or Property Tax
PEP Political Leader Phillip Edward Alexander calls for stamp duty to be removed if the government wants to impose a property tax
PEP Political Leader Phillip Edward Alexander calls for stamp duty to be removed if the government wants to impose a property tax
Port of Spain, Trinidad & Tobago – Phillip Edward Alexander, Political Leader of the Progressive Empowerment Party (PEP) [at the time this statement was made], has publicly asserted his belief that the stamp duty paid on properties should be sufficient, negating the need for the property tax currently being imposed on the population.
Alexander explained his position by stating that it is “almost as if the government is taxing the population twice for their lands.” This argument highlights a significant concern among some citizens and political figures regarding the perceived double taxation on property ownership in Trinidad and Tobago.
His comments contribute to the ongoing national debate surrounding property tax implementation and its financial burden on citizens. Alexander’s stance reflects a call for a re-evaluation of the current tax structure, advocating for a more streamlined and equitable approach to property-related levies.
Reporter Kandace Jackson has more details on Alexander’s arguments and the implications for property owners across the country.
