T.h.a. Announces Efforts On The Way To Identify Shipwrecked Vessel And Clean Up Oil Spill
Scarborough, Tobago – February 7th, 2024 – The recent oil spill from a shipwrecked vessel off Tobago’s coast is not only affecting Scarborough but has spread to bays as far as Roxborough, prompting an urgent response from local authorities. Speaking at a press conference today, Chief Secretary Farley Augustine confirmed that the immediate priority is to identify the mystery vessel responsible for the environmental disaster.
Augustine highlighted a critical concern: neither the Tobago House of Assembly (THA) nor the Tobago Emergency Management Agency (TEMA) had received any reports of a missing vessel or a vessel in distress prior to the spill. This lack of prior warning has complicated initial response efforts and raised questions about the vessel’s origins and circumstances.
As cleanup efforts begin and the extent of the oil spill in Tobago becomes clearer, the focus remains on understanding the source to mitigate further environmental damage to the island’s precious marine ecosystems and coastlines.
