August 25, 2025 – Tobago is poised for significant advancements in youth and sports development, following strengthened collaboration between the Tobago House of Assembly (THA) and the Ministry of Sport and Youth Affairs.
The partnership was formalised during a recent courtesy visit by Minister of Sport and Youth Affairs, Phillip Watts, who met with Secretary of Community Development, Youth Development and Sport, Wane Clarke. The discussions focused on strategic support to advance Tobago’s sporting infrastructure and youth programs.
Minister Watts reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to supporting the THA’s vision for empowering young Tobagonians and enhancing sports facilities across the island. Secretary Clarke outlined critical areas requiring attention, including the urgent maintenance of ageing lighting systems, capacity-building programs for coaches and groundskeepers, and the need for nationally certified training initiatives.
One of the key outcomes of the meeting was the need to clarify roles and responsibilities between the THA and National Sporting Bodies, ensuring that Tobagonian athletes receive proper representation and support at all levels.
Assistant Secretary Megan Morrison also raised the importance of upgrading and certifying the track at the Dwight Yorke Stadium. She noted that international accreditation would open the door for Tobago to host sanctioned global competitions.
The visit concluded with a tour of major facilities, including the Dwight Yorke Stadium and the Canaan/Bon Accord Recreational Grounds, where ongoing challenges and future development plans were assessed.\
