Where is the Money?

Assemblyman Watson Duke has expressed concerns regarding the cost of the Tobago Public Transportation Company, which was debated at the 22nd Plenary Sitting yesterday.

Duke also raised questions about whether individuals would be required to use the Tobago company for their travels, as opposed to the port authority, and whether there would be a fee for the vessel to dock in Trinidad. “Would the transportation be the same cost as they are now paying to travel to Trinidad by air and sea, would it be higher? What about the comfort levels, travelling against the atlantic ocean, would it be comfortable?

Duke brought up the subject of autonomy in the debate and pointed out that some of his colleagues may not fully understand its importance. He further emphasized that autonomy involves granting Tobagonians the authority to make decisions, including those related to transportation. “The whole quest for autonomy is to allow Tobago to make greater decisions regarding its own economy, its own social, cultural development.” Assemblyman Duke raised questions about whether the objectives he outlined concerning autonomy are incorporated into the transportation company and whether it would stimulate economic growth.

He expressed his belief that it would not boost the economy immediately, as the primary focus should be on retaining funds first.
