SSS’s Trolley Dash

In a flurry of excitement and strategic shopping maneuvers, three male teachers from Scarborough Secondary School recently participated in the 2nd edition of the SSSA Trolley Dash. This unique event, organized by the school’s alumni association, aimed to support the institution while testing the shopping prowess of its educators.

Selected by random draw, Jesse Belfast from Technical Drawing, Shane Ewing teaching English Language, and Owen Joefield, Workshop Attendant in Mechanical Engineering, faced the challenge of filling their grocery carts within a strict three-minute timeframe and a budget cap of $1500.

Cassandra Thompson-Forbes, the Media Liaison for the event, emphasized the Alumni’s commitment to giving back to the school through engaging activities like the Trolley Dash. “This is just one of the many ways in which the alumni is supporting the school,” she stated.

Each teacher approached the challenge with unique strategies and shopping priorities. Owen Joefield adopted a straightforward approach, efficiently navigating the aisles to gather ingredients for a festive Christmas meal. Despite his meticulous planning, he managed to come under budget with $19.10 to spare.

Shane Ewing had a clear focus on essentials like turkey and ham, along with a special treat of cherry brandy. His energetic approach involved skating through the store, leading him slightly over the budget, as expected.

Jesse Belfast, known for his action-oriented demeanor, entertained spectators with his lively shopping style. His goal was to ensure he could host a memorable Christmas gathering, even if it meant exceeding the budget by a planned margin.

Vice Principal Patricia Elliot Peters, reflecting on the event, humorously commented, “Men can shop, yes, with instructions from women,” sparking laughter among attendees.

The Trolley Dash not only showcased the teachers’ agility in a shopping setting but also highlighted the camaraderie and support within the school community. As participants filled their carts with groceries, the event raised questions about gender stereotypes and shopping habits, prompting varied opinions among spectators.

The Scarborough Secondary School Alumni’s Trolley Dash not only raised funds but also provided a lighthearted yet competitive platform for faculty engagement, reinforcing the spirit of giving back and fostering school pride.
