Scarborough, Tobago – August 9, 2024 – The University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT) has conducted a study on the livelihoods of fishermen in Tobago, revealing that the fishing industry on the island generates $1.2 billion annually.
This significant study was sponsored by Shell Trinidad and Tobago Limited, which found it necessary to conduct a proper analysis of the industry to address claims from fishermen who might be affected by the company’s oil exploration activities. The findings of this UTT study provide crucial empirical data on the economic value of Tobago’s fishing sector, highlighting its importance to the island’s economy and to discussions surrounding the impact of offshore industrial activities.
