Emancipation Day is a significant event observed on the 1st of August each year. This day marks the anniversary of the abolition of slavery in the Caribbean, a pivotal moment in the region’s history. Emancipation Day is a powerful reminder of enslaved Africans’ and their descendants’ resilience and contributions. Today, Cultural Officer 4 from the Division of Tourism, Culture, Antiques and Transportation appeared on the morning show, where he shared the plans for the celebration in Tobago.
Jesse Taylor assured there are many great things planned for this year’s celebration including the customary street procession. Because of the significance of the drums to our emancipation, Taylor said it will be a focal point of this year’s event. He emphasised emancipation day as an opportunity to be educated about the struggles of the ancestors and why people should be thankful for their contribution.
