October 9, 2024 – The Central Statistical Office (CSO) has released its report on price fluctuations for August 2024. Consumers saw a welcome decrease in prices for some basic goods, such as market vegetables and soya bean oil. However, prices for items like parboiled rice, eggs, and Irish potatoes increased during the same period.
According to the CSO, the Index for Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages dropped from 149.6 in July to 149.2 in August, reflecting a 0.3 per cent decrease for the month. This decline was largely due to falling prices for tomatoes, celery, and other vegetables. However, these reductions were overshadowed by rising costs for various staples. The CSO reported a 1.5 per cent increase in food prices compared to August 2023, with overall inflation rising by 0.4 per cent over the past year.
