CSO reports fluctuations in food prices

CSO reports mixed price changes in August 2024; decrease in some commodities offset by rise in rice, eggs, and potatoes.

Consumers saw a decrease in prices for some basic goods, like market vegetables and soya bean oil for August 2024. However, prices for items such as parboiled rice, eggs, and Irish potatoes increased. According to the Central Statistical Office (CSO), the Index for Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages dropped from 149.6 in July to 149.2 in August, reflecting a 0.3 per cent decrease. This decline was largely due to falling prices for tomatoes, celery, and other vegetables. However, these reductions were overshadowed by rising costs for various staples. The CSO reported a 1.5 per cent increase in food prices compared to August 2023, with overall inflation rising by 0.4 per cent over the past year.
