Chief Secretary Farley Augustine says only $4.3 million from $47.3 million in oil spill compensation claims were found to be valid
Lowlands, Tobago – Compensation for fishermen affected by the oil spill has hit a snag. In a press conference today, Chief Secretary Farley Augustine explained that only $4.3 million out of $47.3 million in claims appear to be validated.
The Tobago House of Assembly is, however, in the process of issuing a portion of the payments owed to fishermen who assisted with the oil spill response efforts. Augustine’s update highlights the challenge of processing the high volume of claims and ensuring the legitimacy of each one.
