Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago – January 1, 2025 – On December 30th, 2024, Trinidad and Tobago was placed under a State of Emergency (SOE) to tackle rising violence, which the government stated posed a serious threat to public safety. However, former Commissioner of Police and National Transformation Alliance (NTA) political leader, Gary Griffith, has publicly stated that the SOE is an “ineffective solution” and an unnecessary measure. Speaking on the Tobago Updates morning show, Griffith argued that the SOE will not address the country’s deep-rooted crime problem, which he believes requires a more comprehensive and strategic approach. Reporter Joeshel Dann has more on Griffith’s views.
