Political leader of Unity of People, Nickocy Phillips pointed out that the sea bridge situation highlights a recurring issue where the government often waits for situations to unfold before implementing backup plans. Phillips believes there should be a more proactive approach, with a greater number of cargo vessels readily available in case of unforeseen events.
Phillips expressed that Tobago should not be hypocritical because a solution has been provided while the Cabo Star is being repaired. They also commended the Port Authority for offering a temporary solution to provide relief to the island for the time being.
Phillips raised the topic of autonomy for Tobago, using the sea bridge situation as an example of why Tobago may not be prepared for such a transition. They posed the question of whether Tobago has the resources to reduce its reliance on Trinidad, particularly considering the absence of manufacturers on the island.
