Emancipation Day in Trinidad and Tobago is celebrated annually on August 1st. This is a significant occasion as it commemorates the freedom of enslaved Africans from colonial masters. In recognition of this day, the Division of Community Development decided to host an Emancipation Village, displaying the handicrafts of students who participated in their programmes.
Community Development recently held handicraft programmes. Assistant Secretary Wayne Clarke noted that the students showcased what they were taught during the classes. We caught up with one of the teachers and her student who participated in a culinary class. The teacher noted that her class was based on traditional foods. She also shared how they used to make traditional meals, including cassava bread and coconut bake.
Her student noted that one of his favourite aspects of the class was learning to prepare the traditional green seasoning. Other interesting trinkets that were displayed at the Emancipation Village were crocheted items, beaded jewellery and decorative pieces.
