Community open land is being blocked off illegally in Sou Sou lands.

Scarborough, Tobago – The New Grange area, also known as Sou Sou Lands, originally established in the 1800s to provide land for those in need, is now facing significant challenges. Over the years, the original purpose of this community initiative has reportedly waned due to a lack of organization.

Today [referring to the day of the report in 2024], Nelda Moore-Nana, a member of the New Grange Developers Cooperative board of directors, highlighted the illegal encroachment on a specific plot of land designated as a “Green Belt.” This area is meant to remain open for the free movement of people in the community, and its unauthorized occupation poses a direct threat to the intended use and environmental integrity of the space.
