Scarborough, Tobago – February 12, 2024 – As the Tobago oil spill disaster entered its sixth day, significant progress in cleanup efforts was observed along the coastlines stretching from Scarborough to Cove. Cleanup crews achieved notable success at Rockley Bay, where substantial removal of heavy oil deposits revealed previously obscured sand, particularly around the iconic “I Love Tobago” sign. However, challenges persisted, as oil residue remained on nearby rocks.
The Tobago Emergency Management Agency (TEMA) proactively responded by delivering CANSORB, a biodegradable substance known for its oil-absorbing properties, to the Magdalena Grand Hotel. This promising solution was expected to greatly facilitate the ongoing oil spill cleanup process in Tobago.
High-level officials, including Minister of Energy and Energy Industries Stuart Young, representatives from Oil Spill Response Limited (OSRL), and TEMA’s Director, visited the primary operational zones to enhance coordination and ensure efficient resource deployment. Efforts continued to mitigate the environmental impact of the oil spill on Tobago’s coastline.
