Scarborough, Tobago – February 28, 2024 – Twenty-one days after the initial incident, the Tobago oil spill cleanup operations are in full swing, driven by a collaborative effort from multiple agencies. The Ministry of Energy and Energy Industries (MEEI) is actively working with the Tobago Emergency Management Agency (TEMA), the Tobago House of Assembly (THA), and Heritage Petroleum Ltd on comprehensive spill response efforts.
Trained local workers are playing a crucial role, equipped with specialized spill response techniques and essential safety measures. Marine assets from the National Energy Company, including the advanced NOFI Current Buster Technology, are aiding in hydrocarbon recovery nearshore, effectively collecting the fuel-like substance.
Heritage Petroleum Ltd responders are working diligently on mangrove and river clean-up, with particular focus on areas around Lambeau Bridge 1 and Thompson River. For offshore sweep tactics, NOFI INAK systems are being utilized, enhancing the efficiency of the cleanup in open waters.
The Trinidad and Tobago Air Guard is providing vital aerial surveillance, offering an overhead view to guide ground and marine operations. The Ministry of Energy’s technical staff remains on the ground, overseeing operations in Tobago, ensuring strategic coordination. Furthermore, international experts are actively assessing vessel conditions, wreck clearance, and salvage activities to address the source of the spill. The extensive efforts highlight the national commitment to restoring Tobago’s environment impacted by the oil spill.
