Tobago-Born Actor Winston Duke Granted Rwandan Citizenship

Winston Duke, the acclaimed Tobago-born actor celebrated globally for his role as M’Baku in Marvel’s Black Panther franchise, has officially become a Rwandan citizen. Duke was naturalized alongside 22 other individuals in a significant ceremony, further deepening his connection to the African continent. His sister, Dr. Cindy Duke, also received naturalized Rwandan citizenship at the same event.

Duke’s ties to Rwanda extend beyond his recent citizenship. He participated in Rwanda’s annual gorilla naming ceremony, a cherished conservation event, where he bestowed the name “Intarumikwa – Resilient Giant” upon a baby gorilla. During the ceremony, Duke lauded Rwanda’s exemplary gorilla conservation efforts, expressing both pride and gratitude for their dedicated work in protecting these endangered species. He also took the opportunity to commend Rwanda’s rich history and its impressive ongoing achievements.

This development follows a previous high-level interaction between the regions. In July 2024, Rwandan President Paul Kagame attended the Caricom Heads of Government summit held in Trinidad and Tobago, where he strongly emphasized the mutual need for stronger ties between Africa and the Caribbean. Duke’s naturalization further symbolizes these burgeoning connections.
