Tobago’s Minority Leader is raising alarm over what he describes as the Tobago House of Assembly’s (THA) growing failure to manage public funds responsibly—an issue that’s leaving small business owners and contractors in financial distress.
According to the Minority Leader, billions of dollars in public funds have been mismanaged, leading to widespread delays in payments owed to service providers across the island. For some, the wait has stretched beyond a year, turning what should be routine transactions into long-standing financial burdens.
“This is not just poor accounting—it’s a crisis of governance,” he said, noting that many small businesses are now struggling to stay afloat due to the backlog.
The issue has amplified public calls for greater fiscal transparency, stronger financial oversight, and immediate action to address outstanding debts. While the THA has acknowledged budgetary pressures in recent months, critics argue that the situation reflects deeper structural inefficiencies in the Assembly’s financial management systems.
As pressure mounts, affected stakeholders are demanding both answers and accountability, warning that continued delays could further weaken Tobago’s already fragile economic landscape.
