February 24, 2026 — A Trinidad and Tobago national has been sentenced to federal prison for his role in a sophisticated operation to smuggle high-powered firearms from the United States to the twin-island republic. Shem Wayne Alexander, 36, of Port of Spain, was handed a four-year and nine-month sentence by U.S. District Judge John L. Badalamenti in the Middle District of Florida.
The sentencing follows a rigorous investigation by U.S. Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) agents. Evidence presented in court revealed that Alexander coordinated the purchase and shipment of several firearms and ammunition, which were concealed in household items and shipping containers destined for Trinidad.
Sophisticated Concealment
According to federal prosecutors, Alexander and his associates utilized various methods to evade detection at U.S. ports of exit, including:
- Falsified Customs Declarations: Mislabeling packages as tools or automotive parts.
- Internal Concealment: Disassembling firearms and hiding components within large appliances and electronic equipment.
- Straw Purchasing: Engaging individuals in Florida to purchase weapons on his behalf to bypass federal background check requirements.
A Blow to Transnational Crime
U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Florida noted that the sentence reflects the severity of the offense and the commitment of federal authorities to curbing the illegal flow of weapons to the Caribbean. Local authorities in Trinidad and Tobago have long cited the influx of illegal American firearms as a primary driver of the nation’s homicide rate.
“The illegal export of firearms from the United States provides the tools for violence and instability in our neighboring nations,” the U.S. Attorney’s office stated. “This case demonstrates our resolve to dismantle these networks at their source.”
Following his prison term, Alexander will be subject to three years of supervised release and is expected to face deportation proceedings to Trinidad and Tobago.
