TRHA & TBFATT Host 25th Annual Breastfeeding Walkathon

August 10, 2026 — Support for breastfeeding mothers must extend far beyond the individual to encompass the entire family unit and broader community. That was the central message delivered by Deputy Chief Secretary and Secretary of Health and Wellness, Dr. Faith Brebnor, during Saturday’s milestone 25th Annual Family Walk and Breakfast – Tobago Edition, held in observance of World Breastfeeding Week 2026 under the global theme “Strengthen What Works!”.

The event was organised by the Tobago Regional Health Authority (TRHA) in collaboration with the Division of Health and Wellness and the Breastfeeding Association of Trinidad and Tobago (TBATT). The morning’s activities kicked off with a lively walk through the streets of Scarborough, led by the rhythmic accompaniment of the Boys’ Brigade—a cherished musical tradition since the inaugural Tobago walk in 2001—before culminating at the Scarborough Library Facility for breakfast and formal proceedings. Delivering the feature address, Dr. Faith Brebnor urged stakeholders to build upon proven maternal health programmes rather than reinventing the wheel:

  • The Vital Role of Fathers and Families: Dr. Brebnor highlighted that maternal success in breastfeeding relies heavily on active partner involvement, urging fathers and extended family members to provide emotional and practical support at home.
  • Breastfeeding-Friendly Workspaces: The Health Secretary challenged both public and private sector employers across Tobago to establish dedicated, hygienic breastfeeding and lactation spaces to accommodate returning working mothers.
  • Institutional Continuity: TRHA Acting General Manager of Patient Care Services, Michelle Edwards-Benjamin, reaffirmed the Authority’s commitment to reinforcing antenatal education and maternity support. She also announced the launch of the Stephanie Charles Legacy Challenge Trophy, which will recognise the health centre demonstrating the highest standard of community engagement and patient education.
  • Best Breastfed Baby Competition: In an unprecedented outcome highlighting the success of the island’s Baby-Friendly initiatives, three babies tied for first place in the 2026 Best Breastfed Baby Competition.
