International Chocolate Day holds significant meaning globally, serving as a delightful reminder of the universal love and appreciation for chocolate. To mark this special occasion in 2023, the Tobago Hospitality & Tourism Institute (THTI) hosted a unique event, offering students from Tobago high schools a front-row seat to the art of chocolate making.
Students had the exclusive opportunity to learn from renowned Chocolatier Jean Claude Petit of Chocolate Delight. With over ten years of experience in the chocolate industry, Petit demonstrated and explained the intricate process used in creating several types of their exquisite local chocolate. A few of the delicious varieties showcased included Bene Ball, Caramel, and Pina Colada.
Jean Claude Petit proudly asserted that the unparalleled uniqueness of Tobago’s chocolate stems from its distinctive flavor. He attributed this superior taste to the exceptional quality of the soil and the island’s pristine natural environment, which are ideal for cocoa cultivation.
For young people interested in the chocolate industry, Petit offered practical advice: they could easily begin their journey right from home. While acknowledging that a rare few might not appreciate chocolate, he underscored that for most of the world, it remains a cherished and delicious treat. This celebration on International Chocolate Day 2023 in Tobago reinforced the island’s potential in the local chocolate production sector and its contribution to culinary arts.
