THA Division of Health Terminates Director of Social Protection Following Sexual Offence Charges

September 2 ,2025 – The Division of Health, Wellness and Social Protection has officially dismissed Hanif Benjamin, the Director of Social Protection, over two months after he was charged with serious sexual offences involving a male child.

Benjamin, who previously served as Chairman of the Children’s Authority and is a clinical traumatologist, faces accusations of engaging in sexual activity in the presence of a child and sexual communication with a child. He is currently out on $170,000 bail and is due to return to court on January 16th.

The decision to terminate Benjamin’s employment follows widespread public outcry and demands for his removal from political groups, including the PNM Tobago Council and the Innovative Democratic Alliance.

In a statement, the Health Division emphasized its zero-tolerance policy toward misconduct. Officials reaffirmed their commitment to integrity and accountability, prioritizing community well-being and justice for those affected. This action reflects the Division’s determination to respond swiftly and firmly to serious allegations.
