Parents and students can add another week to the school vacation calendar. The Ministry of Education has officially pushed the start of the new academic year to Monday, September 8th. Education Minister Dr. Dowlath says the extra time is critical to allow crews to complete major repairs and infrastructural upgrades at schools.
And as work continues on school buildings, the government is also moving to fill classrooms, fast-tracking the hiring of 100 contract TVET teachers, a move the Minister calls decisive. The new hires will help fill a 165-vacancy shortfall currently affecting 95 secondary schools, with the aim of bolstering the nation’s technical and vocational education programs.
