Republic Bank has announced a new limit on U.S. dollar credit card spending for customers in Trinidad and Tobago. Effective August 21st, 2025, the bank will cap all international credit card transactions at US$2,500 per billing cycle.
The restriction applies to all overseas purchases, including international online transactions—even those billed in TT dollars. Local spending, however, remains unaffected.
This move comes amid Trinidad and Tobago’s ongoing foreign exchange challenges, which have made it increasingly difficult for individuals and businesses to access U.S. currency. Republic Bank joins several other financial institutions that have already introduced similar or stricter limits in response to the national FX shortage.
The cap is expected to impact consumers who rely on foreign transactions for travel, online shopping, and international services, underscoring the wider economic pressures currently facing the country.
