16 Students From Latin America And The Caribbean Are In Tobago To Conduct Training In Protecting Underwater Cultural Heritage

Scarborough, Tobago – A significant initiative focused on preserving marine history, the Project for the Protection of Underwater Cultural Heritage in the Caribbean, officially launched today in Tobago. This pioneering program brings together sixteen university students from across Latin America and the Caribbean to participate in specialized training.

The students will be exploring and documenting shipwrecks in the Scarborough Harbour, gaining hands-on experience in maritime archaeology and heritage preservation. This crucial project is being facilitated through a collaborative effort between the International Program for Maritime Heritage of the Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands and the Kingdom of the Netherlands, in partnership with Tobago’s Division of Tourism, Culture, Antiquities and Transportation.

This initiative not only enhances the region’s capacity to protect its rich underwater heritage but also positions Tobago as a key hub for maritime archaeology training and research.
