Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar Proposes Higher Legal Age Limits for Alcohol, Gambling, and Marijuana

Port of Spain, Trinidad & Tobago – July 8th, 2025 – Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar has announced her government’s plan to significantly increase the legal age limits for certain activities, including alcohol consumption and gambling. Speaking last evening during the United National Congress’ (UNC) Monday Night Report, the Prime Minister revealed upcoming legislative changes aimed at protecting the nation’s youth.

Under the proposed new policy, the legal drinking age will be raised to 21 years. Additionally, the government intends to impose new restrictions, prohibiting both gambling and the smoking of marijuana for individuals under the age of 25 years.

Prime Minister Persad-Bissessar indicated that these measures are part of a broader strategy to address societal issues, combat addiction, and reduce the social harm associated with these substances and activities. This move signals a strong commitment from the new administration to prioritize public health and youth development through stricter regulations, aiming for a more responsible and mature society.
