Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley dismissed criticism from Chief Secretary Farley Augustine regarding the granting of more autonomy to Tobago. Augustine had stated that Dr. Rowley failed Tobago during his time in office by not granting the island what it sought. However, Dr. Rowley condemned Augustine’s statement, rejecting the claims. Dr. Rowley accused Augustine of making unfair criticisms of his government while overlooking the role played by the Opposition in the matter. The Tobago Island Government Bills were rejected by the Opposition in December 2024, following objections raised by Augustine over certain clauses in the legislation. Dr. Rowley argued that the bills would have granted Tobago several of its key requests, including a 6.8% share of the national budget and law-making powers in specific areas. He stated that this was an arrangement fully supported by his government. Dr. Rowley labelled the remarks as an offensive attempt to deceive Tobagonians as elections approach. The Chief Secretary has yet to respond to requests for comments on the matter.
